Yikes, I put on some gorgeous sandals today and my feet are not as beautiful as they should be!  But hey, 4 months in boots, booties and pumps may contribute to a disregard for the always fashionable pedicure. If you’re anything like me, you may have had a little too much fun splurgin’ on wedges, and platforms, and pumps (oh my!) . Perhaps a much much needed mani-pedi isn’t in the budget at the moment? Not to worry! You don’t need to go to the salon to make your feet summer-worthy. Try these easy tips to make your feet nice and ready for sandal season.  Easy on your eyes AND your wallet!

1. Start with a clean canvas!

Make sure that all the old nail polish is off and that your nails are the color that they should be.  If your nails are discolored, rub them with lemon juice.  Lemons have an oxidizing effect and will brighten your nail bed.

2. Rub a Dub Dub!

Before you trim ‘em down, you gotta’ soften them up!  So soak those tootsies in warm water with a half cup of Epsom salt.  This will soften your cuticles, skin, and the nails.  Want an instant foot massage?  Put marbles in the bottom of the container that you’re using.  Ahhh!

3. Scub ‘em and love ‘em!

One of the most important parts of the pedicure procedure is making sure your skin is soft. So a DIY foot scrub is a must (especially if you’re on your feet a lot). Don’t think you have to splurge on this one either. You can make a great scrub from stuff you have lying around the kitchen. Take brown sugar, sea salt, olive oil  and mix them together. There’s no exact formula—just mix until you have a texture that you like. Be sure that you are using more brown sugar than salt.  The scrub feels amazing and will leave your skin extra soft.

4. File for Style!

Trim your toe nails to the length that you want them with a toe nail clipper. Be careful not to go too short! When you file them, be sure to file in one direction.  If you go back and forth, you can cause splitting. Get an orange stick (a.k.a. cuticle pusher) and gently push back the cuticle. You can also use the orange stick to  get dirt and debris from underneath the nail.

5.  Color Courageous!

Once your nails are bare and your skin is nice and soft, you get to the easy part—choosing a color.  Remember, it’s summer time baby, so don’t be shy.  Get inspired by the season!  Think candy and flowers; go bright and bold!  You don’t have to feel beholden to one solid color either.  Try leopard print or a cherry on your big toe.  You will be amazed at the designs you can do if you have some patience and a toothpick.  Just pick one lucky piggy and paint her a different color from the rest.  See if anyone notices.

6. Decorate Accordingly!

Ok, now that your feet are all set, it would be a travesty to put an unworthy pair of shoes on those tremendous toes.
